Towing Requirements & Equipment Guidelines
Truck Size:
A ½-ton truck or larger is recommended for towing most moving trailers.
For dump trailer rentals, a ¾-ton truck is required.
If you’re unsure about your truck’s towing capacity, check the manufacturer’s specifications.
Don’t have the right vehicle? Enterprise Truck Rentals offers tow-ready pickup trucks with proper tow packages and 7-pin light plug connections at competitive rates.
Tow Package:
A Class IV hitch or a tow package rated for the trailer’s gross vehicle weight (GVW) is strongly recommended.
The tongue weight is typically 10%–15% of the combined trailer and cargo load.
Note: A ball mounted directly to a vehicle’s rear bumper is unsafe and should not be used for towing.
Ball Size:
-
Double axle trailers require a 2 5/16” ball and have electric brakes on both axles.
-
Single axle trailers use a 2” ball and do not have trailer brakes.
Need a ball and mount? We offer towing equipment rentals with a 10,000 lb tongue weight rating for a one-time fee of $15.
Light Plug:
-
Most of our trailers are equipped with a 7-pin round light plug (also known as a 7-pin RV plug, with 6 outer pins and 1 center pin).
Without a compatible plug on your vehicle, trailer brakes will not function. -
Single axle trailers are equipped with a 4-flat light plug (no brakes).
Brake Controller:
A brake controller is required in your tow vehicle to rent a tandem axle trailer.
Without a brake controller, the trailer’s brakes will not engage, creating a serious safety risk.
Single-axle trailers do not require a brake controller.
All rentals require the renter to have a valid driver's license issued by the state. We do not accept identification cards in place of a driver's license. If you’re renting a trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or more, you will be required to show proof of a valid Class A CDL license.
All renters or drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
Proof of insurance is required. Rental protection is included with all rentals.
What is rental protection?
You pay a $5 fee per day, which is added to the rental. In the event of an incident that causes damage to the trailer, you or your insurance are only responsible to pay the first $1,000.
Can I decline the damage waiver?
Yes, but only if you provide us with a certificate of insurance (COI) from your insurance company naming our company and our VIN as additional insured.
Will my insurance cover a trailer rental?
The only way to know if your insurance will cover trailer rentals is by contacting your insurance company and asking them. However, a COI would still be required.
Trailers may not be taken out of state and must be returned to our location at 420 McCale Rd. Montgomery, TX 77316. Rentals are restricted to the State of Texas. Each moving trailer is equipped with a GPS tracking system.
All cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the start of your reservation for a 100% refund and cancellation of the rental contract.
If you need to extend your rental period, please notify us at least 24 hours in advance. Payment in full is required at the time of the extension. Any late rental returns will incur another day's charge if not returned within 30 minutes of the rental return time.
Renters are responsible for all toll violations, tickets, fees, permits, and fines incurred while using or operating the vehicle. We strongly recommend visiting the issuing toll company or agency's website to promptly pay any tolls and violations, as late fees and additional charges may be applied soon after a violation occurs. Additionally, Tow-n-Go Trailer Rentals may charge administrative fees to process and pay a violation on your behalf.
While we do not expect our trailers to come back pristine, we do ask that you please be courteous when returning your trailer. Any trailer returned with an excessive amount of mud, sand, trash, dirt, etc. may be assessed a cleaning fee, the cost of which depends on how much extra time is required to properly clean the vehicle, with a minimum fee of $50.
If a tire is damaged during your rental, notify Tow-n-Go Trailer Rentals immediately. Their policy does not cover tire damage, meaning the repair or replacement costs will be your responsibility. Tow-n-Go offers 24-hour roadside assistance for a fee, which can help with the process. After the tire has been fixed or replaced, you may be able to file a claim with your insurance company for reimbursement of any excess charges.
When renting equipment for your projects, do you understand that you are responsible for:
- Any damage to the trailer during the rental period.
- All repair or replacement cost during the rental period
- Any tire damage, including blowouts
- Rental cost during the period that the trailer is being repaired or replaced
In most states, you can tow a horse trailer with a standard driver’s license, as long as you stay within weight limits. Always check your state’s regulations before renting.
Most 2-horse bumper-pull trailers can be towed with a half-ton truck or larger. Gooseneck trailers typically require a ¾-ton truck or bigger with the proper hitch setup.
Yes, many horse trailer rentals include tack rooms, saddle racks, and bridle hooks to keep your equipment organized.
